Carla was born in the bustling town of Lima, Peru in the mid seventies to parents who were hippie ragamuffins. She moved to Washington, DC at age three where she spent time exploring her grandmother’s spectacular jewelry box full of Amazonian jewels and the finest Peruvian gold. As time passed she began to sculpt her mother’s gardening wire into all sorts of interesting shapes. With her mother’s encouragement, the following years were full of all things art. Carla began painting, sewing, sculpting, sketching and photographing. In high school, she was drawn to the art program and soon began her focus in Photography, Studio Art and Sculpture.
She excelled at wire sculpture and began melting all sorts of interesting materials over designs including crayons, plastic bags, and sadly enough, a neon blue pair of Doc Martens her ex-boyfriend gave her. She knew this was her calling. After college she dedicated her time to designing her one of a kind jewelry for family and friends. An idea was born and led to the creation of Lola and George in 2002.
These days, Carla’s creations are inspired by her love of astronomy; the most requested designs being the J4, Luna ring, Sol ring, Scream Queen Cluster ring and Type A cufflinks.
Carla’s travels also greatly influence her designs. Some pieces have a subtle Incan influence which can be seen in intricate spiral patterns. Ancient Incan civilizations used spirals to represent personal evolution and strength. Peruvian jewels, beads, semi precious stones and berries are sometimes incorporated
in some pieces. Carla also works with deconstructed vintage pieces drawing inspiration from the films of the 1930’s and 1940’s, in particular the exceptional glamor of Rita Hayworth and Jane Russell.
Carla lives and works in Las Vegas.
